Can You Pass The Theory Test Without Revising?

Think you’ve got the skills out on the road to pass your practical test? You’ll still have to complete your theory test first, and it’s not as straightforward as you might think.

In 2019/20, only 47.7% of learners passed their theory test, meaning more than half didn’t get enough questions right to pass. If you’re hoping to wing it and pass with no revision, you’re unlikely to be successful unless you’re extremely lucky! With 50 multiple choice questions to contend with, plus the hazard perception section afterwards, odds are you’ll seriously struggle without doing any revision.

What do I need to revise?

In order to pass, you’ll need to get 43 of the 50 multiple-choice questions correct and score 44 out of a possible 75 points on the hazard perception element. That means you’ll need to brush up on the highway code to make sure you have a good understanding of driving laws, signs, road markings and best practices.

Unlike school exams, there’s no grading system here: you either pass or fail. And because the required pass mark is quite high, there’s no substitute for comprehensive revision.

To make the process easier, you can purchase the DVSA’s official theory test guide, which tells you all you need to know to pass with flying colours. A variety of mobile apps are available for you to test your knowledge too, some of which don’t cost a penny – and they really do help.
