Driving Lessons In Lockdown 3 – Everything You Need To Know

It was a year ago that lockdown restrictions put driving tests on hold across England. Now we’re in lockdown 3, you may be wondering if the rules have changed – and more to the point, whether you can still learn to drive!

Can I take driving lessons during lockdown 3?

Unfortunately, you cannot take driving lessons during lockdown 3.

If you’re one of the many learner drivers anxious to finally get your full driving licence, the good news is lessons are planned to resume on April 12.

Can I take my driving test during lockdown 3?

Unfortunately, no! For many learner drivers this has been a huge frustration as they have been unable to take their theory or practical driving test. If you had a driving test booked during lockdown, you should have been contacted by the DVSA with details of a rescheduled test.

So, when can I take my driving test?

The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel, with driving tests set to resume from April 12.
However, if you haven’t already booked your test you may still have a little wait. It’s not expected that the DVSA will open their booking portal straight away due to the backlog of postponed tests.
Will I need to wear a mask?

Even when tests and lessons finally resume, you may still need to wear a mask unless you have a valid reason not to.

Can I learn to drive with someone in my bubble?

Many of you may be thinking surely it’s OK to learn to drive with someone in your support bubble. If you’re insured to drive, it makes sense, right? Well, actually the DVSA have made it very clear that you should only drive for essential purposes, which unfortunately does not include practising for your driving test. Essential reasons for travel by car include, travelling for work, education, food shopping, etc. In these instances, it’s OK to drive as a learner.

How can I learn to drive during lockdown 3?

Here at GoGoGo, we completely understand the frustration of not being able to practice driving. For many who started to learn but had to abandon their lessons, you may be worried that you’ll have to start from scratch after so long off the road.

However, there are still plenty of things you can do to give yourself the best chance of passing when all the restrictions are finally lifted.

Practising your theory test, revising the ‘show me, tell me’ questions and familiarising yourself with the Highway Code until you can recite it in your sleep will certainly put you way ahead of the game.

If someone in your support bubble or household has a car, you could also ask them to run through the essential parts of the car and how they function – they could even test you on some of the ‘show me, tell me’ questions.

With the news reporting favourably on progress of vaccinations and coronavirus cases falling, we’ve got our fingers crossed that all learner drivers will be able to resume lessons and tests on April 12. More importantly, we hope that those who pass with us will be able to enjoy their newfound freedom and hit the road for a much-needed summer getaway!
