Top Tips for Learning to Drive From Home

Since Friday 20th March 2020, thousands of hopeful learner drivers have had to put their driving tests on hold in response to the coronavirus outbreak. As a 5day Peterborough driving school, we have particularly missed seeing our GoGoGo graduates ace their tests and leave with a smile. Whilst this is hugely disappointing for everyone involved, this doesn’t mean you can’t use this time to prepare yourself to ace both your theory and driving test once restrictions are lifted.

We know that you’ll be eager to speed up the process as soon as you can, so let’s take a look at some of our top tips on learning to drive from home.

Show me, tell me

Although it was first not advisable to go out and practise with a parent or someone you are living with, now that we have seen restrictions relax slightly it may be worth getting in some hours of practice to refresh your memory. This could be getting out on the road to sharpen your practical skills, or getting to know the workings of a car.

If you’re shielding or isolating, you could still draw upon someone else’s expertise by asking them to test you on ‘show me, tell me’ questions ready for the real thing on your practical examination!

Practice, practice, practice

Did you know that there are several online tools available to help practise for your theory exam?

These official DVSA sample hazard perception clips can help build your confidence when responding to hazards on the road. This is a crucial part of the theory exam as it is testing your ability to be safe on the road – hazards come in all shapes and forms.

The government also offers a free practice theory test to help get you used to the real thing. You’ll need to answer 50 multiple choice questions within 57 minutes, and score a minimum of 43 questions correctly to pass. With practice, you’ll easily pass the theory test, however the DVSA reports that the 2019/20 theory test pass rates were only 48%. Don’t ignore the theory exam – you won’t be able to even attempt a practical exam until you pass!

Driving themed Zoom quiz

Not tired of Zoom quizzes yet? Ask your friends or family to create a Highway Code quiz where everyone can join in. Practising for your theory doesn’t have to be boring! Create picture rounds, multiple-choice questions, fill in the blanks – whatever motivates you to learn, do it.

Testing helps to discover gaps in your knowledge, which could be crucial in passing the test.
