Help – What’s the speed limit? What to do if you’re not sure
So, you’re driving along and you suddenly realise you have no idea what the speed limit is. You’re looking out for a sign, but they seem to be non-existent. You look at the flow of traffic, but you’re still not sure. This will happen to most drivers at some point. In this guide, we’re providing you with all the tips you need to stay safe and avoid a speeding ticket – even when you have no idea what the speed limit is.
You are expected to know the speed limit, even if there are no signs. But, in order to do that, you need to know what to look out for.
Speed limits can vary depending on what vehicle you are driving as well. But for this article, we’re focusing on cars.
Built-up areas = 30 mph
If there is consistent street lighting placed not more than 200 yards apart, this is a good indicator that you are in a built-up area. 30 mph is typically true. Some built-up areas will have an even lower speed limit of 20 mph.
Single carriageways = 60 mph
Traffic flowing in both directions is undivided. You will typically be able to drive the open speed limit on these roads. However, a common sense approach is required. Tight bends should be tackled with caution and at a slower speed.
Dual carriageways = 70 mph
A dual carriageway has separate traffic lanes for each direction. The division is referred to as a central reservation and will often consist of a metal barrier or a grass verge.
Motorways = 70 mph
Motorways allow you to get up to speeds of 70 mph. Smart motorways will have live updates on the speed limit, so you should pay attention to the digital screens and signposts for any changes.
