What Questions Do They Ask In The Theory Test?

You are here:
< All Topics

The DVSA has a pool of around 1000 questions they can ask on the theory test. But don’t worry – you won’t have to face all of these! You will only be asked 50 questions, with an expectation to get at least 43 of them correct to pass. The good news is that these questions are multiple-choice. That means that even if you don’t know the answer you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting it right. But what questions do they ask in a theory test?

Most of the questions will be based on the Highway Code. You won’t need to read the Highway Code word for word, but you will need to have a sufficient understanding of the rules of the road. Three of the questions will also be based on a short video clip which features a car driving through a town centre or on a country road.

Let’s take a look at the different topics that could come up in your test…

General driving rules and techniques

Signals, stopping procedures, lighting, control of the vehicle, speed limits, stopping distances, lines and lane markings and multi-lane carriageways.

Using the road

Rules for using the road, including general rules, overtaking, road junctions, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and reversing.

Rules for driving in adverse weather conditions

Whether driving through ice, snow, fog, wind or abnormally hot temperatures, knowing how to handle your car and adapt your driving in adverse weather conditions is important.

Motorways

Including motorway signals, joining the motorway, driving on the motorway, lane discipline, overtaking, stopping and leaving the motorway.

Rules for breakdowns and incidents

Rules for waiting and parking

Road works, level crossings and tramways

Signals, traffic signs and road markings

Some topics are easier to learn than others. Most are best learnt out on the road in your practical driving lessons, or by simply completing as many practice questions as you can. If you’re not sure about any of these topics, you can always ask your instructor. We hope this guide will help make revising for the multiple choice questions seem a little less daunting. Happy revising!
