3 Manoeuvers You Need To Know To Pass Your Driving Test

Part of feeling confident about your driving test is knowing everything you’ll be asked to do. To pass your practical test with flying colours you need to be able to demonstrate one of three manoeuvres. You won’t know which manoeuvre you’ll have to do on the day, so it’s best to have them all under your belt before taking the test. Your driving instructor should help you get the hang of these during your lessons.

One thing the three manoeuvres have in common is that they all involve reversing. Handling a vehicle while reversing may sound daunting when you’re still getting the hang of driving, but there are tried and tested methods to tackle each manoeuvre which should work every time.

So, what are the 3 possible reversing manoeuvres:

  1. Parallel park involves reversing into a space at the side of the road.
  2. Bay parking is a skill which most drivers use. From supermarkets to shopping malls, most car parks use a bay parking system which involves either reversing in or out of a marked space. Your driving instructor will drill the bay parking manoeuvre until you can handle it like a pro. On your test, your examiner will tell you whether they want you to drive in and reverse out, or reverse in and drive out.
  3. Pull up on the right side of the road: Last, but certainly not least the third manoeuvre involves pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for two car lengths and rejoining the traffic when it’s safe to do so.

Aside from these main manoeuvres you may also be asked to perform an emergency stop, a hill start or to simply pull up on the side of the road.

It’s natural to have some manoeuvres that you prefer over others. It’s also natural to feel nervous about performing well under test conditions. Just imagine you’re having another lesson and remember you can take your time. There’s no rush, you just need to show you can actually do the manoeuvre accurately and safely!
