If you like to be super prepared for every eventuality, you may want to know whether driving test routes are published. Knowing ahead of time which routes you could be asked to drive would be ideal. You could practice until you’re able to drive all the routes in your sleep! Going over areas you’re more nervous about would also put you at ease. Likewise, knowing that certain routes won’t crop up on your test could help.

Knowing the driving test routes beforehand sounds like a great idea. But, the reality is that it doesn’t support independent driving skills.

Back in 2010, the BBC reported that the DSA (now DVSA) would no longer be publishing driving test routes online. You may wonder why they would do such a thing?

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said: “Stopping the publication of test routes will help to make sure that the driving test better reflects realistic driving conditions and will give new drivers the skills and confidence they need to stay safe on the roads.”

So, the short answer to your question is that driving test routes are not published – and for a good reason. By not spending all your revision time going over the test routes, you can spend more time out on the roads, paying attention to the signs and waymarkers.

You don’t need routes stored in your head, you just need to build your confidence so you can tackle almost any road.

Are driving test routes random?

There will be traditional routes that examiners will use. However, these can be updated and changed.

Your driving instructor should ensure you practice a wide range of routes that are local to your chosen test centre.

You can also practice in your free time if you have access to a car and responsible driver. If there are any tricky spots, you can spend more time going over them. By getting out on the road, you can learn how to comfortably navigate carriageways, narrower country lanes, roundabouts and busy urban roads.
